Lake Placid to Host Eight Major Events in March 2022 on Modernized Venues

The Olympic Regional Development Authority Prepares Olympic Venues for Over 1000 Athletes

Lake Placid, N.Y. (March 1, 2022) - The Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) will host eight major events in March, bringing over 1000 athletes to the ORDA venues and the Olympic Region. Hosting multiple events is not new to ORDA however, as the excitement this March is in the broad scope of events, athletes, and levels of competition returning to the area, some for the first time in over two decades -- thanks to investments by New York State in these facilities.

The pursuit of the top of the podium kicks off March 2-5, with the FISU World University Championships in speed skating, the first international long track speed skating event in years, on the James C. Sheffield Speed Skating Oval. Then, the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) National Championships will take place from March 6-12 at Whiteface and Mt Van Hoevenberg featuring competition in alpine, snowboard, freeski, and Nordic skiing. On March 18-19 the newly modernized Olympic Center welcomes back ECAC Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, while the USA Bobsled teams return for training and their team championships March 21 – 25.

Rounding out the month is a triple header weekend for events, kicked off by a Lake Placid Athlete Parade & Olympic Athlete Homecoming on March 24. USA Biathlon returns to Lake Placid for the US Biathlon National Championships March 25-27 for the first time in 20 years, while Team USA and many international notable athletes will compete at the FIS Lake Placid Continental Cup. The schedule includes Men’s Nordic combined and Women’s HS100 ski jumping, the first women’s FIS ski-jumping competition to take place in the U.S. since 2009. Hockey excitement will continue in the Olympic Center on the evenings of March 25-26 with the NCAA DIII Men’s College Ice Hockey Championship. Finally, short track speed skating will glide into April 1 – April 3 with USS Short Track Age Group National Championships.

Since its inception after the 1980 Olympic Winter Games, ORDA has brought over 510 national and international Events, 115 World Cup competitions, and 19 World Championships to northern New York. Over the past three years, ORDA has keenly focused on updating infrastructure, modernizing lodges and guest experiences, investing in technology, and making upgrades to the sport facilities that will allow ORDA to continue to host world-class training and competition for many winter sports.

“The work that has been done to the Olympic venues in Lake Placid is remarkable,” said Mike Pratt, ORDA President and CEO. “The modernizations and upgrades were strategically planned with sights set on hosting major sport events, athlete training, and attracting visitors to the area for years to come.”

These events are open to the public. For tickets and more information visit:  www.lakeplacidlegacysites.com
