Why Learning How to Ski in New York State is the Best Bet for Savings & Fun

New York State is the home of the Yankees, the METS, the Statue of Liberty, and Niagara Falls.

It's also the home of more places to ski and ride than any other state in this great union. ANY OTHER STATE – even the ones that claim the Rockies as home plate. Try searching for skiing near me and we bet you an I SKI NY resort pops up!

So if you're a New Yorker or even a weekend warrior looking for awesome places to make memories with your family, a New York ski resort is a sure bet for a time-of-your-life experience. Literally, if you've never skied before in your life, you can find a way to do it for free with I SKI NY. Here's how:
I Ski NY's Free for Kids Passport program offers third and fourth graders the opportunity to learn to ski for FREE at any participating ski area in New York State. The package includes a lift ticket, lesson, and equipment rental for free at each participating mountain. The catch: you've gotta prove that your little one is in the 3rd or 4th grade.

Acceptable proof includes: a page from a 3rd or 4th grade report card (in a pinch a past-year report card works as long as it's dated), or a letter from your child's school confirming their grade level. Acceptable proof does not include: art projects, videos of the school play, and homework. And don't scan and submit a copy of your kid's birth certificate. That is so not necessary.

Bonus: you don't have to be from New York to ski here! All and sundry are welcome. Bring your niece, nephew, frenemies and buddies from summer camp.

Now that the nitty-gritty details are squared away, here's where the going gets good:

  • Of the 60-some ski resorts spread across New York State, over 30 participate in I SKI NY's Free for Kids program – which means no matter where you live in the Empire State, you're never more than a few hours from the slopes.
  • There is a $27 processing fee to sign your little ones up for the Kids Ski Free Passport program, but that covers the passport – which will be mailed to you – and saves you a ton of cash when you consider what three lift tickets, rentals and lessons would cost at 30 different ski resorts!
  • Drive Less and Ski More with Ski Areas of New York's Ski & Stay packages this winter. On select weekends throughout the winter, enjoy a third night free and a third day of skiing free at participating resorts across the state.
  • I SKI NY offers a bunch of programs for skiers and riders of all ages and abilities, including:

Discover NY Ski Day on January 18, 2018 gives skiers and riders a chance to enjoy ski areas across New York for as little as $12. Learn to ski or ride packages are available at participating ski areas starting at $25. Sign up online and be the first to know when vouchers go on sale at participating ski resorts

Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month is January of every year. Kick off the New Year by learning a new sport: alpine skiing or snowboarding, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Ski areas across New York State are offering free – or reasonably priced – lessons throughout the month of January. The initiative is meant to make skiing and snowboarding more accessible to more American families.

The bottom line is, New York is where it's at for winter fun. All of the programs listed above are free or super cheap, and ISKINY.com offers a bunch of other discounts and incentives for beginners and their more experienced friends.
