Learn to Ski & Snowboard

Learn to Ski and Snowboard is a national initiative that encourages kids and adults to learn how to ski and / or snowboard or improve their skills by taking lessons from a professional instructor.

Humans were never meant to hibernate

Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month was started in 2008 when resort associations in just a couple of states decided to launch their state-wide programs. The NYS governor, along with 15 others proclaimed January as the time to learn how to ski or snowboard and in some states, learning programs for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are part of the initiative. Now, Learn to Ski and Snowboard is a national initiative that partners with national, regional and state associations that are part of the ski and snowboard industry, the industry trade media and individual resorts or companies that service the industry. Today, more than 300 ski and snowboard areas throughout the U.S. offer free and reasonably priced lesson programs through January or the entire ski season as part of this initiative to get more Americans on the slopes. Our goal is to get more American families on the slopes, enjoying a healthy winter lifestyle.

We love to ski and snowboard and we want to share our love of the sport and encourage others - no matter if you're five or eighty-five - to come out and hit the slopes with us. If you haven't gone skiing or snowboarding for a couple of seasons, here is your chance to take an affordable refresher lesson and get yourself back into enjoying the winter outdoors. Skiing and snowboarding are sports to enjoy for a lifetime.

Feel free! And when you return, pick up where you left off. · The OLE Ski and Ride Program is offered weekends and holidays. About the OLE* Program: The Open Learning Environment Program is a unique and extraordinarily effective way to learn to ski and ride. It is based on the understanding that skiing and riding are fundamentally open skills. As such, the most effective learning takes place in an open learning environment. Incorporating the latest sports research on open versus closed skill development, the OLE Program utilizes the Experiential Learning Model of Prof. David A. Kolb, Educational Theorist, and importantly, integrates the open learning environment with zone-based teaching. These elements allow students to move through the various performance zones as their personal skiing and riding skills and their comfort with varying terrain develop. The Program also uses a simple, non-technical approach that accelerates the learner’s skill development by focusing on sensation and outcome rather than complex descriptions of what to do. You learn to ski and ride by actually skiing and riding. *OLE - Windham Mountain Resort’s Open Learning Environment Program was put together by members of the Windham Mountain Resort snowsport staff. The concepts of the OLE Program are based on research by Joan Heaton and Jim Vigani involving the incorporation of open skill learning into modern ski teaching methodologies. Bruce Meirowitz has concurrently adapted the elements of open skill learning into the snowboard teaching methodologies. Tony Sturnolo has been instrumental in organizing and coordinating the Zone-teaching logistics.

The Rossignol Junior Ski & Ride School (JSRS) at Greek Peak is well known for its children’s ski and ride (snowboard) program.

Just ask a parent with kids in the race program or those rippers under the age of ten heading down the black diamond trails. Mostly likely they have spent some time at the JSRS. Kids learn from other kids and of course, it helps to have an instructor requesting to teach them. The Junior Ski & Ride School program hires and trains instructors particularly interested in providing a safe, fun and structured program designed especially for children ages 3-14. Lessons group kids of similar age and/or ability to maximize success and provide the appropriate lesson environment on the mountain. The instructor encourages the children to make smart choices, stay safe and have fun. Instructors encourage improvement while nurturing confidence during the lesson. Most of all, JSRS Instructors show how it is a fun sport, at the same time insisting your child is learning in a safe and positive environment. The Rossignol Junior Ski & Ride School motto is “Safety first, then fun – all while learning!” Junior Ski & Ride School Pricing Pee Wee (11am & 1pm) - $59.00 Pee Wee 3 pack - $140.00 Rental included ½ day (morning: 9:30-12 pm, afternoon: 12:30-3:00 pm) - $85.00 3 pack ½ day - $199.00 Rental not included ($20.00 rental available when participating in program) Full day (9:30 – 3pm) - $125.00 (Includes lunch) 3 pack full day - $299.00 Rental not included ($20.00 rental available when participating in program)
